Where Drip Edge Is Required by Code

Drip edge is the most uniform requirement in this corpus — the mirror image of the ice-barrier map, which splits messily state by state. Of the jurisdictions carrying an explicit sourced answer, the overwhelming majority require it, and every jurisdiction we cover in Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas that answers at all answers yes — the base IRC R905.2.8.5 mandate (drip edge at eaves and rakes) survives their adoptions unamended. The exceptions are worth knowing precisely, because they are STATE-level deletions rather than city choices, so no city inside them can restore the requirement. Minnesota deletes the section outright: Minnesota Rules part 1309.0905, subpart 2 states that "Section R905.2.8.5 is deleted in its entirety," which is why Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Bloomington, Plymouth and Maple Grove all answer no, and why the state DLI tells homeowners drip edge is not required unless the shingle manufacturer requires it. Wisconsin never had the requirement to begin with: its Uniform Dwelling Code is Wisconsin-drafted rather than an IRC clone, and Wis. Admin. Code s. SPS 321.28 ("Weather protection for roofs") contains no roof-edge drip-edge provision at all — the only "drip edge" references in the whole chapter are a chimney-cap detail and a deck ledger flashing detail. Watch two wrinkles inside the No column. Saint Paul does require a metal drip edge in one narrower situation, to protect new sheathing panel edges when re-decking. And Independence, Missouri is the rare jurisdiction pointing both ways at once: its published re-roofing handout says drip edge is not required, while its own adopted 2018 IRC leaves R905.2.8.5 in force — installing one satisfies both readings, omitting one relies on the handout. Because a manufacturer’s installation instructions can require drip edge as a condition of warranty even where code does not, "not required by code" is not the same as "safe to omit."
