The building permit authority for the Town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Building permit applications require prior approval from the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR), and the town began enforcing its 2024 building code adoption (Town Code Chapter 18) on January 1, 2026, including wildfire resiliency provisions.

Permit process note
A building permit application form is used to obtain a building permit, and BOZAR approval must be received prior to submitting a permit application. Online permitting and payment through Cloudpermit is coming soon, starting with company registration for architects, designers, contractors, and owners acting as general contractors; miscellaneous building fees can be paid online.

Starting January 1, 2026, the Town of Crested Butte enforces new building codes adopted as the 2024 Building Code in Chapter 18 of the municipal code, alongside the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code, in support of the town's climate action goals.

Not required — The Town of Crested Butte adopts the 2024 International Residential Code by reference at Crested Butte Municipal Code Section 18-2-10, and its local amendments to that code are collected at Section 18-2-30. The amendment section was reviewed in full; the Town's residential amendments reach Sections R105.2, R202, R301.2, R309.2, R310.3, R310.4, R311, R319.4, R325.2 and R406.2, and none addresses impact resistance or requires UL 2218 Class 4 roof coverings.

The Town of Crested Butte adds its own climatic and geographic design criteria table, which also sets a flat roof snow load of 100 pounds per square foot, severe weathering, a frost line depth of 36 inches, a slight termite probability, a winter design temperature of minus 16 degrees Fahrenheit, an air freezing index of 3,500 and a town elevation of 8,921 feet. Ground snow load is listed as not determined, so the flat roof figure is the one the table supplies.
Sales & use tax
9.4% combined (state 2.9% + Gunnison County 1% + Gunnison Valley Rural Transportation Authority 1% + Town of Crested Butte 4.50%). The Town is home rule and self-collecting, appearing in DR 1002's "Home Rule Cities For Which The State Does Not Collect Local Sales Tax" table at 4.50% sales tax and 4.50% use tax. The RTA's DR 1002 boundary is "Gunnison County except the towns of Marble, Ohio City, Pitkin, and Somerset", so it reaches Crested Butte; it was previously folded into this total without being named. The Town levies a 4.50% use tax on construction materials, deposited at building-permit issuance.
