Western Red Cedar shakes sawn on both faces but thicker than a shingle, so they are applied as a shake with felt interlay, from Watkins Sawmills. The brochure lists Number 1 Grade (face 100 percent clear, at most 20 percent flat grain), Premium Grade (100 percent edge grain) and Number 2 Grade, in nominal 18 and 24 in. lengths and 5/8 or 3/4 in. thickness, for roofs of 4:12 and steeper at up to 7 1/2 in. (18 in.) or 10 in. (24 in.) exposure for the upper grades, plus a 15 in. starter-finish course. Fire-retardant treated Premium and Number 1 tapersawns for Class A, B or C roofs and CCA treated shakes are available. The warranty page lists taper sawn shakes at 40 years for 5/8 in. and 50 years for 3/4 in., though its table prints the 24 in. x 3/4 in. row twice and has no 18 in. x 3/4 in. row.
