Western Red Cedar shakes from Watkins Sawmills with a split face and a sawn back. The brochure lists Number 1 Grade (clear heartwood, at most 20 percent flat grain) in 18 in. lengths at 1/2 in. medium and 3/4 in. heavy minimum thickness and 24 in. lengths at 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in., 4 to 14 in. wide, and Premium Grade in 100 percent edge grain, for roofs of 4:12 and steeper at up to 7 1/2 in. (18 in.) or 10 in. (24 in.) exposure. Watkins also offers straight-split barn shakes and tapersplit shakes for historic work, and states the shakes are graded to UBC Standard 15-3. Fire-retardant treatment for Class A, B or C roofs and CCA preservative treatment are available. Its 40/50 year limited warranty covers Number One Grade product at 40 years for 1/2 in. and 50 years for 3/4 in. split and resawn shakes, with replacement or a pro-rata refund, registration within 30 days, and exclusions for untreated shakes in a list of southern and Gulf states.
