Sales & use tax
7.90% in unincorporated Hinsdale County, rising to 9.15% inside the Lake City Area Fire Protection District. The components are the Colorado state rate of 2.9% and Hinsdale County at 5.00%, which is among the highest county rates in the state and is easy to understate if a figure is carried across from a neighbouring county. The fire district adds 1.25% and its boundary in the state rate tables is given as the "Lake City area including small surrounding areas of Hinsdale county," so it reaches the town and some but not all of the surrounding unincorporated county - which parcel a job sits on decides whether 7.90% or 9.15% applies, and that is worth confirming rather than assuming. USE TAX IS THE PART MOST LIKELY TO CATCH A ROOFER OUT HERE: Hinsdale County levies a 4% use tax and it applies to building materials as well as motor vehicles, so materials brought into the county without Colorado sales tax already paid on them attract the countys 4% on top of the states own 2.9% use tax. ONE TRAP IN THE STATE TABLE ITSELF, WHICH SHOULD NOT BE READ AS A SECOND DISTRICT HERE: the fire protection district table carries a row labelled "La Veta" at 0.50% whose printed boundary reads "Lake City area including small surrounding areas of Hinsdale county" - the same text as the Lake City Area row immediately below it. La Veta is a town in Huerfano County, and the boundary description against its row is a publication error rather than a second Hinsdale district. Only the Lake City Area district at 1.25% applies here.
