A North American association devoted to natural roofing slate, whose mission is to set a material and installation standard for slate roofing and to promote it. The association says it started in 1922 and was reformed in 2002. Its members include slate roofing contractors, quarriers, distributors, architects and consultants, and it publishes the Slate Roofs Design and Installation Manual, released in 2010, along with a slate roof specification guide, technical bulletins and a free mobile field guide for installers.

Membership benefits
Members are listed in the NSA Member Directory, receive technical updates and bulletins, and get access to the experienced contractors, quarriers and consultants who wrote the association's manual. Full members (contractors, quarriers and distributors) and affiliate members (architects, engineers, conservators and roofing consultants) can vote and hold office; associate members such as students, preservationists and facility managers cannot.
