An independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and communications organization supported by property insurers and reinsurers, formed by the property-casualty insurance industry in 1977 and known by its present name since 2011. It runs a full-scale test facility in Chester County, South Carolina, studies how roofs perform in wind and hail, publishes hail impact ratings for asphalt shingles, and administers FORTIFIED, a voluntary construction and re-roofing program whose FORTIFIED Roof level calls for enhanced deck nailing, a sealed roof deck, locked-down roof edges and high wind-rated roof covers.
