nationalA standards development organization, founded in Philadelphia in 1898 as the American Society for Testing and Materials, whose volunteer technical committees write test methods, specifications, guides and practices. Its Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, formed in 1905, has jurisdiction over roofing and waterproofing standards for materials largely made of asphalt, coal tar, polymer modifiers, rubbers and plastics.
