Western Red Cedar tapersawn shakes from Miller Shingle Company, sawn on both sides from old-growth logs for a relatively smooth, uniform roof. They come in 18 and 24 in. lengths at 5/8, 3/4 and 7/8 in. thickness, each as Number 1 Premium (100 percent vertical grain), Number 1 Regular (80 percent vertical grain) and Number 2, with custom tapersawns available. Miller recommends kiln drying to 10 to 13 percent moisture if they are used on sidewalls, and offers fire rated and CCA treatment.
