The building permit authority for the Town of La Veta, Huerfano County. The Town has adopted its own 2021 International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, and International Existing Building Code (La Veta Municipal Code Title 15), operates its own Building Inspector, and issues its own Town of La Veta contractor licenses (Types A-F) — this is a Town-level building department that operates independently of the Huerfano County Regional Building Authority, not a delegation to it.

Work requiring a building permit may not begin until the permit is separately approved and issued by the Town of La Veta Building Inspector.
Permit process note
The Town's own "Building Permit Application" (Town of La Veta letterhead, 209 South Main Street) lists project-type checkboxes including New Construction, Residential, Commercial, Manufactured Home, Remodel, Addition, Roof, Garage, and Demolition, confirming roof work is a named permit category. Per the attached "Building Permit Fees" sheet: "Fees must be paid before a building permit will be issued. Any building started without a permit may result in a summons to Court or double the permit fees, this is at the discretion of the building inspector." A permit "shall become null and void if the work described in the permit is not commenced within 120 days ... or if the building or work is abandoned ... for a period of 120 days." Valuation is assessed by the building inspector, and plan submission (with dimensions) is required for structural work, waivable at the building inspector's discretion. La Veta Municipal Code 15.04.030/15.08.060 make it a misdemeanor (fine up to $300 and/or up to 90 days imprisonment per day of violation) to erect, alter, repair, move, remove, demolish, or occupy any building or structure contrary to the adopted codes. Setback requirements (10 ft front/rear minimum, 6 ft side minimum, or front-property-line build-to on the two blocks of 4th Street between Denver and Christy Avenues) and a two-story/35-foot maximum building height apply per Municipal Code 15.08.070.
Inspection requirements
Per the Building Permit Fees sheet: "The building inspector shall make periodic inspections during the construction process. It shall be the responsibility of the Applicant to notify the Building Inspector at the completion of each phase of the construction and request an inspection prior to covering, building upon or continuing inspection." The permit and inspection record must be posted on-site, protected from the elements, until a final inspection is completed and a Certificate of Occupancy is issued.

La Veta Municipal Code Sections 15.04.010 and 15.08.010 (as amended by Ord. No. 337, Sec. 4, 8-6-2024, superseding Ord. 233 Sec. 4, 2008): "The International Building Code excluding Chapter 9 in its entirety but including Appendixes A, B, E, F, G, and I, the International Residential Code including Appendixes AE, AF, AG, AH, AJ, AM, AR, AS, AU, and AW, the International Mechanical Code and International Existing Building Code, 2021 Edition, published by the International Conference of Building Officials," adopted "pursuant to Title 31, Article 12, Part 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes 1973," with the La Veta Municipal Code taking precedence over the model code where the two conflict. Municipal Code 15.04.020 separately adopts the 1997 Uniform Mechanical Code by reference for heating/ventilating/cooling/refrigeration systems. Title 15 also includes Chapter 15.12 (International Energy Conservation Code), Chapter 15.20 (Flood Damage Prevention), and Chapter 15.25 (Impact Areas), which were not reviewed in detail this pass.
