Registration details
  • license: There is no separate roofing-contractor category; the Residential Re-Roof Permit page states "Contractor must be registered as 'General Contractor' to work in the city." The General Contractor Registration page requires company information, a completed application, an authorized signature, a copy of the applicant's driver's license, and a $75 registration fee, processed through the Customer Self-Service portal.

"A Residential Re-Roof Permit is required for any roof replacement/ recovering or repair, the purpose of the permit is to ensure that the proper codes are being followed." The page further states "Permits are required for all roofing projects and the work shall comply and maintained in accordance with the Unified Development Code, International Property Maintenance Code, and the Code of Ordinances." Commercial re-roofing is likewise required to have "an approved permit by the Building Inspections Division," with submittal requirements including a completed Commercial Re-Roofing Questionnaire and roofing material specifications. Permits are applied for online through the Customer Self-Service portal and are typically processed in approximately 5-10 business days.
Inspection requirements
Per the Residential Re-Roof Permit page's Inspections tab: "All inspections shall comply with the 2021 International Residential Code and Unified Development Code (UDC), Article 6." Work may not proceed beyond the point indicated in each successive inspection without prior approval (Ref. 2021 IRC, 109.4), and it is the responsibility of the permit holder or their agent to request inspections through the Customer Self-Service portal when work is ready.

Grand Prairie's Code of Ordinances, Chapter 7, Article I states: "The 2021 Edition of the International Building Code of the International Code Council, excluding appendices and Sections 114.2, 114.3, and 114.4, together with 'Option A' of the recommended amendments of the North Central Texas Council of Governments... is... hereby adopted as the Building Code of the City of Grand Prairie" (Sec. 7-7, Ord. No. 11131-2021), and similarly adopts "The 2021 Edition of the International Existing Building Code... excluding appendices and Sections 113.2, 113.3, and 113.4, and with the recommended amendments of the North Central Texas Council of Governments" (Sec. 7-8).
