Registration details
  • license: The contractor on a permitted project must be licensed with the Town of Carbondale. Each contractor must hold a valid B.E.S.T. card (unless exempt, e.g. a state-licensed plumber), and the license application must include a certificate of contractor's liability insurance and a certificate of worker's compensation insurance (or a signed waiver if the contractor has no employees). The license is valid for one year.
Permit process note
A building permit is required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, including roof repairs and replacements. Re-roof permits typically have a 1-day administrative review followed by about a 1-week building department review. Applications and documentation are submitted by email as PDF attachments to the Building Department; inspections are scheduled by calling the inspection line by 5:00 PM the business day before the requested inspection.

The Town of Carbondale has adopted the 2021 International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, International Energy Conservation Code, International Existing Building Code, International Fuel Gas Code, and International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, along with the most current electrical code adopted by the State of Colorado, effective July 1, 2025.
