Permit process note
The Town's "Forms, Permits & Licenses" page and its "Building Permits" sub-page (both rendered client-side via Munibit widgets, so they do not appear in a plain HTML fetch) list "Building Permit Inspections" and "Applications" as the two building-permit sections, with "Applications" linking separate CommunityCore portal registration flows for "PROPERTY OWNERS" and "CONTRACTORS." A "Build Permit Codes, Submittal Requirements, and Checklists" section covers "Residential, Commercial Tenant Finish/Remodel, New Commercial, and Restaurants & Commercial Kitchens" and links four attachments: a "2024 Client Design Criteria Ault" sheet, a "2026 SAFEbuilt RESIDENTIAL APPLICATION CHECK LIST," and revised Commercial Tenant Finish and New Commercial plan-submittal-procedure documents. The 2026 SAFEbuilt residential checklist states plan review is performed by SAFEbuilt Colorado and requires (electronically) a completed application, a plot plan, architectural/floor plans, engineer- stamped structural plans, electrical/mechanical plans, a soils report, Manual J/D/S calculations, and 2024 IECC energy-code compliance documentation (ResCheck or an energy-rating report); the approved, printed plan set must stay on site through final inspection. The Town publishes no roofing- or reroof-specific permit requirement, and no explicit contractor-license or registration requirement appears on its own pages (the "Contractor Licensing" link on the Forms & Permits page routes to the same CommunityCore registration flow as the general Applications section, without stated licensing criteria). Confirm both with the Town before starting work.
Adopted code
The Town's "2024 Client Design Criteria Ault" sheet lists, for residential construction, the 2024 International Residential Code, 2024 Energy Conservation Code, and 2023 National Electrical Code; for commercial construction, the 2024 International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, and Energy Codes plus the 2023 National Electrical Code and 2024 Pool and Spa Code; and, as other adopted codes, the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code and 2024 International Existing Building Code, alongside state Electric Ready/Solar Ready/EV Ready requirements. The same sheet lists a 115 mph ultimate design wind speed, 30 psf roof live load/15 psf dead load, and states "Ice and water shield required" and "Under floor protection required" as special requirements. The Building Permits page's own "Build Permit Codes" list matches on the 2024 IRC/IBC/IECC/IFGC/IPC(UPC)/IMC(UMC) and 2023 NEC editions; the design-criteria sheet is linked from that page.
Impact-resistant roofing
Not required — The Town of Ault's published "Current Codes Adopted" list (2024 IBC, 2024 IRC, 2024 IECC, 2024 IFGC, 2024 IPC/UPC, 2024 IMC/UMC, 2023 NEC), its "Design Criteria Town of Ault" sheet, and its "2024 IRC Residential Re-roofing" homeowner guide — published by SAFEbuilt, Inc., the Town's building department, and dated 1.1.2026 — were reviewed in full. The re-roofing guide requires asphalt shingles to be tested to ASTM D 7158 and meet the classification requirements of IRC Table R905.2.4.1(1) for a 115 mph ultimate design wind speed, which is a wind rating rather than an impact rating, and it states expressly that impact-resistant shingles are not required, naming the Town of Timnath as the guide's only jurisdiction where they are. The design-criteria sheet's only special roofing requirement is ice and water shield on all roofs. No adopted Ault provision requires UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant roof covering.
Sales & use tax
Ault's combined sales tax rate is 5.9 percent: 2.9 percent Colorado state and 3 percent Town of Ault, with no county component and no special district. Weld County levies no sales tax, and the Town is state-collected rather than home rule, so its rate appears in the Colorado Department of Revenue's state-collected city schedule in form DR 1002.
