The building permit authority for the Town of Akron, the county seat of Washington County. The town's Building Inspector handles permit review and inspections; plumbing and electrical permits are handled by the State of Colorado, and a Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained before any building can be occupied.

Permit process note
Any structure built, placed, or added to within town limits first requires a building permit, submitted to Town Hall in person, by email, or by mail with a plot plan; building fees and use taxes are calculated on construction cost and are due with the application. For roofs, the town allows one layer of regular shingles over an existing 3-tab shingled roof but not over a heritage shingled roof, requires shingles rated to withstand 110 mph wind, and does not itself require ice and water guard or a drip edge on residential roofs (insurers may).
